Your Wedding Is Over... Now What? The Details Couples Forget to Plan

You’ve spent months, maybe even years, planning your wedding day. You’ve thought about the ceremony, the flowers, the food, the music, the photos, and every little detail in between.

Then suddenly, the last song plays, your guests say goodbye, and your wedding is over.

Now what?

One of the most overlooked parts of wedding planning is figuring out what happens after the celebration. While you’ll hopefully be floating on newlywed bliss, there are still flowers, gifts, décor, clothing, paperwork, and plenty of other things that need somewhere to go.

A little planning ahead means you don’t have to worry about any of it when the night arrives. Here are a few post-wedding details worth thinking about before your big day.

Decide Who Is Taking Everything Home

You probably arrived at the venue with a lot more than you realize. Signs, framed photos, guest book supplies, extra favors, ceremony décor, personal items, overnight bags, and all those little details you spent months collecting have to go somewhere at the end of the night.

Make a plan ahead of time for who is responsible for taking personal items home. This is a great job for a trusted family member or friend who isn't rushing off immediately after the reception.

And be specific! Instead of saying, "Can you grab our stuff?" make sure they know exactly what they're responsible for.

The last thing you want to do after an incredible wedding is walk around trying to remember whether someone grabbed your card box.

Make a Plan for Your Gifts and Cards

Speaking of the card box, this is one item you definitely don't want to leave until the last minute.

Choose a trusted person ahead of time to be responsible for your cards and gifts at the end of the evening. Make sure your wedding coordinator and immediate family know who that person is so there's no confusion when cleanup begins.

Once those items are safely accounted for, you can leave the reception without worrying about them.

What Happens to Your Flowers?

Those gorgeous arrangements don't necessarily have to disappear when the wedding ends.

Before your wedding, talk with your florist about what happens to your flowers afterward. You may want family members to take arrangements home, preserve your bouquet, or find another meaningful way to enjoy them after the celebration.

If bouquet preservation is important to you, research your options before the wedding. Some preservation methods require flowers to be delivered or shipped quickly, and that's probably not something you'll want to research the morning after your reception.

Don't Forget About the Dress... and the Suit

After hours of photos, dinner, dancing, and celebrating, your wedding attire will probably need a little attention.

Decide ahead of time where your dress and your partner's attire will go after the wedding, especially if you're leaving for a honeymoon shortly afterward. If you're planning to have your dress professionally cleaned or preserved, research your options before the wedding so you already know the next step.

And don't forget about rented suits or tuxedos! Know who is responsible for returning them and when they're due.

Your first newlywed morning shouldn't begin with someone realizing the tux has to be returned in an hour.

Figure Out What Happens to Leftovers

Cake, desserts, late-night snacks, and other extras can easily be forgotten at the end of a long night.

Talk with your caterer and vendors ahead of time about what can be taken home and how it will be packaged. Then assign someone with enough vehicle space to take those items with them.

If you’re planning on enjoying your leftover cake the next day or freezing the top for your first anniversary, you’ll want to know who’s packaging the cake for transportation and who’s taking it home that night. (Hint: put a slice in your getaway car for next day snacking)

Know Your Vendor Responsibilities

Depending on your vendor agreements, there may be a few things that need to happen immediately after the wedding.

Rental items may need to be gathered in a certain location. Décor may need to be removed. Equipment may be picked up that night or the following day.

Before your wedding, review these details with your planner or coordinator so everyone knows who is responsible for what. Your vendor team can handle a lot behind the scenes, but knowing the plan ahead of time keeps everyone on the same page.

Give Yourself Something to Look Forward to After the Wedding

There can be a strange feeling when something you've planned for so long is suddenly over.

Give yourselves permission to enjoy the next chapter instead of immediately jumping into another checklist.

Spend the morning looking through the photos your friends took. Open cards together. Eat leftover wedding cake for breakfast. Talk about your favorite moments from the night before. If you're leaving for your honeymoon, enjoy the excitement of what's coming next.

Your wedding may be over, but your marriage is just beginning.

The Rest Can Wait

There will eventually be thank-you notes to write, photos to choose, albums to create, name changes to consider, and plenty of other newlywed tasks.

You don't have to do them all immediately.

Take some time to enjoy being married before turning your wedding into another to-do list. When you're ready, tackle those tasks together a little at a time.

Plan Ahead So You Can Simply Leave

The goal of planning for the end of your wedding isn't to give yourself more things to worry about. It's actually the opposite.

When you've already decided who is taking the gifts, where your dress is going, what happens to the flowers, and who is responsible for your belongings, you don't have to think about any of it when the night comes.

You can dance to the last song, hug the people you love, look around Park Home Ranch one more time, and leave as newlyweds.
